Is recycled paper the best option or can fresh fibres also contribute to a circular economy?

The possibility to create high-quality paper from a waste product is a great way to contribute to a circular economy. At the same time, paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. At some point, the fibres become too short, usually after four to six lifecycles. That means that even with the most thorough post-consumer collection of waste paper, we would run out of usable paper to recycle at some point and are therefore still dependent on sustainably sourced fresh fibre paper. There are plenty of other factors that make up a sustainable product, so fresh fibre paper — in other words, new paper made from pulp — is sustainable when sourced responsibly. Our sustainable paper guide, helps paper buyers make a sustainable choice.

What is post-consumer waste?

Post-consumer waste – as opposed to pre-consumer waste, post-consumer waste is paper that has been used by a consumer and has then been collected in a recycling effort.

What is CO2-offsetting?

Even with the most rigorous measures, some CO2-emissions are inevitable in every production process. While Mondi’s efforts so far have had a great impact on CO2e reduction, a certain baseline of CO2e emissions remains. For certain consumer products, we offset the inevitable carbon footprint by supporting internationally recognised carbon offset projects, in partnership with Climate Partner. Through Climate Partner environmental projects are financed, which will help reduce CO2-emissions on a global scale, thereby offsetting the amount of CO2 that is still emitted during a production process.

What do FSC™ and PEFC stand for?

Responsible forest practices are vital for our business, and we work with internationally renowned organisations to ensure this. Among them, the most recognised certifications are FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council™) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Both FSC™ and PEFC monitor wood and wood fibre throughout every step of the supply chain, from the forest to the end user.FSC™ labels are on millions of products worldwide, from egg cartons to your favourite book, so chances are you’ve come across one before. FSC™ is an international non-profit organisation, established in 1993, to promote responsible forest management worldwide. The FSC™ label is an assurance that the paper you purchase is produced from wood that comes from FSC™ certified forests, controlled or recycled sources. There is also an FSC™ recycled label which verifies paper made from 100% recycled materials.PEFC is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999, dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. The PEFC logo is a declaration that the wood fibres in paper products come from PEFC certified sustainably managed forests, controlled or recycled sources.

What do the different ecolabels stand for?

Ecolabels certify the overall sustainable practices and measures taken in producing goods that contribute to a circular economy. They serve to both inform consumers about the environmental impact of their purchases and encourage producers to improve the sustainability of their goods. Mondi offers papers certified with Blue Angel, EU Ecolabel or Cradle to Cradle Certified® as strong proof points for our efforts in product sustainability. What does it mean that a product is Cradle to Cradle Certified®?

The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute is dedicated to powering the circular economy through products that have a positive impact on people and planet. Having products that are Cradle to Cradle Certified® means we take action on sustainability by using resources from nature and returning them to nature as nutrients. This is how we can keep materials in circulation and eliminate waste.The Cradle to Cradle Certified® Product Standard assesses the safety, circularity and responsibility of materials and products across five categories of sustainability performance: material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness.
