Education & collaboration

Mondi sustainability Education - collaboration

When it comes to the topic of sustainability, we must begin by acknowledging its complexity. Sustainability is multifaceted, covering everything from extreme poverty to carbon emissions. It isn’t just about recycling or reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; it’s about creating systems that can operate into the future without depleting resources or harming communities or the environment.

Partnerships & advocacy

Mondi’s commitment to open dialogue and collaboration, and to finding sustainable solutions has given birth to many impactful partnerships over the years.

Take for example our WWF-Mondi partnership, which has been in place for over 30 years. It has historically focused on wetland conservation and water stewardship in priority catchments, and will continue to address the need for water security in South Africa.

Then there’s the unique science-business network TEAMING UP 4 FORESTS, founded by Mondi and IUFRO, to tackle key challenges in the sustainable provision of wood-based products to meet societal demands.

While our partnership with the Endangered Wildlife Trust aims to map biodiversity footprints in our South African forestry operations. Through it, we’ve identified material species and explored accounting methods for biodiversity impacts. Through these and other partnerships, we know we are making a real difference.

Mondi Zimele - community projects

Community projects

We believe that our success as a business is closely linked to the wellbeing and prosperity of our communities. This is especially true for Mondi South Africa (MSA), where our operations are deeply embedded in the communities they serve. Effective stakeholder engagement is therefore a cornerstone for building trust, addressing local issues, and for developing targeted social investment programmes.

One such programme is Mondi Zimele which was established in 2007 as a small business development initiative aimed at promoting economic independence and self-sufficiency in rural communities. Since its launch, Mondi Zimele’s small scale timber program has supported over 3,800 small growers. In 2024, Mondi sourced around 190,000 tonnes of timber from small rural holdings, roughly equivalent to 10% of Mondi South Africa’s wood requirements.

Sustainable paper finder

Sustainable Paper Finder

Finding a sustainable paper solution isn’t as straightforward as we would like. That’s why we created the Sustainable Paper Finder.

To help customers understand, amongst other things: whether recycled paper is the only sustainable option; what the difference is between the various ecolabels; what sustainably sourced wood means; and whether it is possible to bleach paper without chlorine?

The answers to these and many other evolving questions are aimed at helping you make an informed choice about the right sustainable paper for you.

After all, sustainability isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

Mondi sustainability education and collaboration - life long learning

Education & training

Not only are we constantly learning at Mondi, but we are also constantly sharing the knowledge we gain.

Like the latest research from Mondi and the Austrian University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) which sheds light on the complexity of carbon dynamics when it comes to managed vs. protected forests. With forests covering about one-third of the Earth's land surface and providing essential ecosystem services, from soil conservation, to raw materials, to climate regulation, this type of research has implications for far more than our own industry.
