What is sustainable forest management?

Sustainable forest management protects biodiversity and ensures tree regeneration capacity by keeping environmental, economic and socio-cultural factors in balance. Responsible forest practices are vital for our business and we work with internationally renowned organisations to ensure this. Among them, the most recognised certifications are FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council ™) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).

What is PEFC?

PEFC is an international non-profit, non-governmental organisation, founded in 1999, dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. The PEFC logo is a declaration that the wood fibres in paper products come from PEFC certified sustainably managed forests, controlled or recycled sources. PEFC is the leading certification scheme in Europe, covering 51% of the total forest area (hectares).

What is FSC™?

FSC™ is an international non-profit organisation, established in 1993, to promote responsible forest management worldwide. Products bearing this label use materials sourced from FSC™ certified forests, controlled or recycled sources. Forests are managed according to rigorous standards and audited by an independent third party.

What is controlled wood?

Controlled wood is wood of known origin with a minimum risk that it is harvested in an unacceptable way. The controlled wood system defines the minimum standards for wood that can be mixed with FSC™ wood. Products made from such material can use the FSC™ Mix label.

What is a dual certification?

Some forests are both FSC™ and PEFC certified. Because of this, the sum of the total certified forest area per country may exceed 100 %. As of 2021, approximately 30 million hectares of European forest area were both PEFC and FSC™ certified.

Our wood sourcing approach

  • 100 % of our wood is sourced responsibly and Mondi Group maintains zero deforestation in the wood supply
  • We aim to make the best use of certified wood from domestic markets
  • Our Mondi SCP Ružomberok mill in Slovakia is fully integrated, which means we are self-sufficient in regards to pulp supply. We source wood exclusively from responsibly managed forests, with a strong regional focus on nearby European countries. In 2021, 94 % of our wood was sourced from Slovakia, Poland and Czech Republic.
  • We source all wood for our semi-integrated Mondi Neusiedler mill in Austria from domestic forests. At Mondi Uncoated Fine Paper (UFP), we are committed to provide our customers with the best paper quality - always responsibly sourced.
